FCC Broadband App at the App StoreLast week, we told you about Google’s plan to bring their highspeed fiber network to select cities around the US, and it looks like the FCC is putting better broadband connections on their priority list as well.

The FCC’s National Broadband Plan that is coming out on Wednesday, with a goal to bring faster Internet to homes across America. In an effort to spread awareness, the FCC is encouraging you to test out your connection through their website, Broadband.gov.

The purpose of the Consumer Broadband Test (Beta) is to give consumers additional information about the quality of their broadband connections and to create awareness about the importance of broadband quality in accessing content and services over the internet. Additionally, the FCC may use data collected from the Consumer Broadband Test (Beta), along with submitted street address, to analyze broadband quality and availability on a geographic basis across the United States.

And for all you iPhone fanatics (we know you’re out there), the broadband test even comes in the form of a free app by Ookla.

So go ahead—take the test. See how good your Internet connection is. Does it compare with Japan’s 160-megabit-per-second service?
